In Memory of Friend and Colleague, Chris Borstad

The ISSM team is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear colleague, Dr. Chris Borstad. Chris was not only a good person always willing to brighten a day with a smile and a laugh, but he was also an invaluable member of the ISSM community.

From 2011-2014, Chris worked with the ISSM team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, developing methods for parameterizing ice shelf damage. Chris’ research laid the foundation for model representation of damage-related calving and ice-shelf breakup, and includes a set of manuscripts highly-regarded by the cryosphere community.

We always looked forward to meeting up with him at AGU, and learning about his Mountain Man adventures in Svalbard and then in Montana. In recent years, we have missed his presence at these community events dearly. His loss leaves a large hole, not only in cryospheric research, but also in our hearts.

His family has posted an announcement of Chris’ passing.
